The Winston-Salem State University (WSSU) cheerleaders brought their HBCU talents to the NFL as by performing with the TopCats Cheer/Dance team of the Carolina Panthers.

This year the TopCats are returning the favor as they will be traveling to the HBCU when Winston-Salem State takes on Shaw University. The game is set for 1 PM on Oct. 12 at Bowman Gray Stadium.

The WSSU Powerhouse Cheerleaders and the Red Sea of Sound Marching Band will perform with the Carolina Panthers’ TopCats in “The Merge.” The two sides first met last December when the Powerhouse joined with fellow HBCU ensembles including South Carolina State cheerleaders and the North Carolina A&T Blue and Gold Marching Machine during a game for the NFL franchise in 2023.

Brandi Smith Hopson, a former WSSU cheerleader, is a captain for the NFL squad.. Quintin DeBerry, also a WSSU alumnus, is Carolina Panthers Director of Inclusion & Belonging.

The Winston-Salem State University (WSSU) cheerleading squad, known as “The Powerhouse of Red and White,” has consistently achieved national recognition. The team gained significant attention for their viral TikTok videos, which highlighted their dynamic stomp-and-shake style and their celebration of natural hair, inspiring many in the HBCU community.

In 2022, the cheerleaders reached new heights by appearing in the music video for Ciara’s single “Jump,” where their performance showcased their unique style and solidified their presence in mainstream media. Additionally, Destiny Martin, a former member of the squad, was selected as a brand ambassador for Champion, further demonstrating the team’s growing influence.
