The Beaufort County School District canceled school on Oct. 10, including all extracurricular activities. This was the re-schedule date for Hilton Head Island at Bluffton. The game will now be played Nov. 8.

Everyone loves an underdog story, so it’s hard not to root for Hilton Head High.

“They’ve all bought in, they all believe,” Head Coach BJ Payne said. “They handle adversity and they’re great in the classroom as well so they have molded themselves into great young men and it carries through.

Earlier this year, the Seahawks upset Hampton County, 35-14, taking down the number one ranked team in Class AA.

“Our emotions, it was real high we were all excited because last year we lost to them 22-6 or something, so a couple years ago we kept on losing to them,” sophomore offensive lineman Hayden Crockett said.

Evan Wilder, senior offensive lineman said, “A big game changer for the rest of the season, cause the last few years have been 3 and 7, and we finally got our 4th win.

Hilton Head hadn’t reached four wins since the 2019 season, but this year all it took was five games, but the team didn’t take much time to celebrate.

“We enjoyed it over the weekend but now nobody cares. It’s about what you do next week, and we open regional play this week so we gotta be ready to go,” Payne said.

This week isn’t any other regional game either, it’s against the team right down the road, Bluffton.

“It’s a rivalry game. I mean both sides will be amped up,” Payne said. “It’s one of those games where you really don’t need a pregame speech.”

Wilder added to Payne’s sentiment, “It’s Bluffton so we really hate them because it’s a rivalry game so like you kinda grew up doing it on the island if you lived here your whole life.”

This team is rolling and has no plans of slowing down.

“We just gotta keep our foot on the gas cause Coach Willow said last week was probably our best week of practice the whole year, and he said we need to have a better week in practice this week,” Wilder said.

Currently, both teams come into the matchup at 4-2.
