Group of Democrats protest Trump’s Savannah stop

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) – Democrats and Republicans were represented outside of the Savannah Civic Center Tuesday where former President Donald Trump made remarks on the tax code and manufacturing.

Proud supporters stood downtown with signs and flags chanting passionately for who they believe should be their next president.

Nearby, dozens of Harris-Walz supporters gathered, organized by the Young Democrats of Chatham County.

The protest remained peaceful, but some words were exchanged between the two groups.

“Trump does not represent Savannah. He does not represent young people. He doesn’t represent women. Doesn’t represent people of color. We’re not about it,” said Tiger Lily Harrington, president of the Young Democrats.

Harrington said their mission is to let the former president know that he is not welcome in Savannah.

“We just don’t think that Trump represents us,” Harrington said. “We don’t want someone who doesn’t support women’s reproductive rights, who doesn’t believe in climate change, who doesn’t believe in fair elections. He is a threat to our democracy.  And so he just does not stand for anything that we stand for.”

Another Harris-Walz supporter held a sign, encouraging people to look up and learn about the controversial Project 2025.

“The reason why we’re here, I think that it’s important to be here so that we can stand for our democracy and not fascism. I think that it’s very important to be an activist and not be filled with hate,” Silberman said.

As a gay, Jewish American, Silberman said he has been offended by some of the things the former president has said.

It was during his interview with News 3 that voices were raised between Harris and Trump supporters.

“I think people should vote for Kamala Harris because you can hear what’s happening in the background. This is hate. And if you are an American, you should believe in the American dream for everyone.”

While the exchange did get very heated, nothing turned violent.
