THOMASTON, Ga. (WJBF) – The Georgia High School Association announced Tuesday that a week will be added to the football regular season to allow schools time to make up games postponed by Hurricane Helene.

The final week of the regular season will now be Friday, Nov. 8. The state playoffs will now begin the following Friday and Saturday. The bye week originally scheduled for Thanksgiving week will be replaced by the quarterfinals. The semi-finals and championship dates are unaffected.

The shift could mean multiple games in a short time frame for some schools.

“Schools affected by Hurricane Helene for two or more weeks may still have to double up and play at Thursday, Tuesday and Saturday sequence. Regions will determine these scenarios with approval from the GHSA,” the organization said in a news release on its website.

The GHSA said other fall sports schedule changes will be released later this week.

The South Carolina High School League was still considering its options as of Tuesday afternoon.

Date changes:

Nov. 1: Original last Friday of the regular season

Nov. 8: New last Friday of the regular season. Make-up games for hurricane-impacted schools.

Nov. 15 and 16: Round 1 of Playoffs

Nov. 22: Round 2

Nov. 29: Quarter Finals

Dec. 6: Semi-Finals

Dec. 16-18: Finals at Mercedes Benz
