Celebrities That Tried Too Hard to Be Relatable

There’s no denying that celebrities are fascinating. People can’t help but want to know as much as they can about their favorite stars. Celebrities are well aware of this and many of them play into it, giving their fans an inside look at their lives and their thoughts. The problem is that some celebrities take it too far, trying too hard to be relatable.

When a celebrity tries too hard to be relatable, it can come off as desperate. Fans will see right through the façade, and if anything, it can even result in a backlash against the celebrity. For example, if a celebrity pretends they play on one of the best $10 minimum deposit casinos or shop at Ikea when they are clearly high rollers who have everything custom built, all this does is highlight the difference between the rich and famous and everyone else.

So, which celebrities have been accused of trying too hard to be relatable? Here’s a list of some of the most obvious.

The Kardashians

Instead of singling out one member of the Kardashian-Jenner household as trying too hard, you can honestly include them all. Each has at one time or another tried hard to be relatable to the audience, only to fail spectacularly. All of the adult children have lived a rich and privileged life since the day they were born, so in that sense they don’t know what it’s like to be “normal.”

To get a glimpse of how detached from reality they are, all you need to do is watch one episode of Keeping Up with the Kardashians. The issues and major problems they have in their lives often seem self-inflicted and aren’t true problems that anyone outside of their world can relate to. While the reality TV show helped build their popularity and success, it also showed a side of them that may not have been wise to uncover.

Here are just a few of the more notable instances of the Kardashians and Jenners trying too hard to be relatable and failing:

● When Kim Kardashian and her husband divorced after only 72 days of marriage, she compared her situation to the struggle and emotions that a cancer patient might feel. She had since gone on to insist it was taken out of context, but there are many other instances we can bring up.

● In an attempt to seem reasonable, Kendall Jenner once decided to prepare her own snack on The Kardashians. Usually, this is the work of their chef, so when Kendall looked confused about how to use a knife and cut up a cucumber, it highlighted how out of touch they were and continue to be.

Jennifer Lawrence

Jennifer Lawrence is known for being the quirky, klutzy, fish out of the water in terms of stardom. Who can forget her falling on stage when accepting her Oscar and needing help to get up? It made her seem normal and likable. But for all the times she has come across as likable, some instances sparked backlash from fans.

One instance occurred when she shared a story about filming in Hawaii. She was filming near ancient sacred rocks on the island, and even though it was forbidden to sit on them, she did anyway—because she claimed she had to scratch an itch. Unfortunately, doing so dislodged the rocks, causing them to fall, narrowly missing crew members. She later apologized and told fans she meant no disrespect to Hawaiian culture.

Cate Blanchett

It almost seems cruel to add Cate Blanchett to this list. Many who have worked with her describe her as incredibly kind and warm. This is a case where two things can be true. She can be a kind person, but she can also be hard to relate to.

Just last year, Blanchett appeared as part of a UN press conferencedue to her title as an UN Goodwill Ambassador. While speaking at the press conference, she was quoted as saying “I’m white, I’m privileged, I’m middle class.”

What caught people’s attention here was her referring to her status as middle class. It is estimated that she is worth US$95 million, hardly what anyone would classify as middle class. It’s clear Blanchett was just trying to connect, but that’s a pretty big stretch.

Gwyneth Paltrow

Here’s someone who is a multiple offender. Gwyneth Paltrow has over the years created a reputation of being completely out of touch with reality and how most people live. She tries hard to be relatable, but it’s easy to find examples of her not coming across as genuine. Just last year, she posted pictures of her daughter attending a debutante ball. This is something most people have no experience with, outside of what you see in movies.

Bella Hadid

Then we have Bella Hadid, a well-known model. Hadid grew up in a wealthy household, but she has tried hard to relate to others with her stories. Hadid once spoke to Vogue about how hard it was not to be allowed to have designer clothes when she was growing up. There was an emphasis on “not allowed,” something most people can’t relate to. Most people can’t afford them—it has nothing to do with not being “allowed.”

Celebrities May Be Wise to Reign It In

To prove they are just like everyone else, celebrities can be guilty of losing the plot. When they try too hard to be relatable, it often can backfire. This is certainly the case for the celebrities on this list, but don’t think they are the only ones guilty of it. While there are some celebrity role models out there, they are far and few between.
