MIAMI, Okla. (AP) — Shawnee Tribe Chief Ben Barnes grew up playing video games, including “probably hundreds of hours” colonizing a distant planet in the 1999 title Sid Meier’s Alpha Centauri. So when that same game studio, Firaxis, approached the tribal nation a quarter-century later with a proposal to make a playable character out of their famous leader Tecumseh in the upcoming game Civilization 7, Barnes felt a rush of excitement. “I was like, ‘This can’t be true,’” Barnes said. “Do they want us to participate in the next version of Civilization?” Beloved by tens of millions of gamers since…
The list of what we are not supposed to say as parents seems to be getting longer— first we were told we could not say “good job,” then “be careful” became off-limits. [For the record, I don’t think there is anything wrong with “good job” or “be careful”— except that these phrases are perhaps not specific enough to communicate most efficiently with your children.] Now the phrase “hurry up” has been effectively cancelled. The recent controversy over “hurry up” seems to stem from a post that went viral on Instagram claiming that the #1 cause of anxiety in children is…
A Mississippi town is attracting national attention after the Department of Justice’s (DOJ) investigation just uncovered a historic level of police corruption. Despite being a small city and having one of the poorest economies in the state, the DOJ’s report found Lexington’s police department continues to disproportionately benefit from excessive fines, which is also known as…
According to a recent survey by BLK, the leading dating app for Black singles, 43% of Black Gen Z daters are currently practicing celibacy. Black Gen Z women are taking the lead in the journey of celibacy, with 64% embracing this lifestyle choice. Interestingly, most of these women are new to the journey, with 63% having adopted it in the past six months. If that doesn’t signal that celibacy is a rising trend in today’s dating pool, I don’t know what will. The shift reflects a growing focus on personal development and mental wellness among young Black daters. The survey…
For These Families, H.B.C.U.s Aren’t Just an Option. They’re a Tradition The HBCU designation was created by the US Higher Education Act of 1965 and included institutions established before 1964, with the “principal mission” being the education of Black Americans. The 105 currently operating HBCUs were founded with a common purpose: to educate a population that routinely had been denied even the most rudimentary level of literacy. From their beginning, HBCUs were intended to be a place of nurturing, a place that recognized that the world was not kind to people of African descent, and a place that recognized the…
