WFMY News 2’s Lauren Coleman highlights Cafeteria Manager Tracey Hunter. She’s worked in Guilford County Schools for 16 years.

GUILFORD COUNTY, N.C. — Some may say lunch is the most important meal of the day. Serving school meals is a joy for Tracey Hunter. She said the students like to call her Mrs. Tracey.

“I really like seeing the smiles,” Hunter said.  “I really love it when they say Mrs. Tracey. I really love this is nasty or, I like that. I like to encourage them to eat something different, more than what Burger King can offer.”

Hunter is the cafeteria manager at Bluford STEM Academy in Guilford County. For 16 years, she’s worked in Guilford County Schools keeping bellies full and minds sharp.

“I make sure I have everything that’s needed on the menu,” Hunter said. “We have a guide that we follow.  A menu for breakfast and lunch, and I have to make sure we have all those items ordered or if there was a mishap with a truck. I have a backup plan.”

WFMY News 2’s Lauren Coleman asked Hunter why it’s important to highlight school employees who work inside and outside of the classroom.

“I think we’re all important,” Hunter said. “I don’t think any role is more important than any other role because even when they come through the line, I’m still teaching them. If they say their mother gave me $3, I want them to give me $3. Are you sure? This is $3, especially if it is change. No, this is not a dollar. Let’s figure it out. It’s still all a teaching moment.”

School Treasurer Derrick Holland and Behavior Specialist Demetris Lawson agree.

“There are a lot of different people, a lot of different kegs in the wheel that cause this whole thing to move smoothly,” Holland said.  “Without any one part of it, the whole thing can fall apart.”

“Back in the day, they used to say it takes a village and literally it does,” Lawson said. “It takes all of us in here in all of our different positions to help our babies.”

Hunter said it’s the village of frontline workers, teachers, and staff that keeps Bludford STEM Academy going.

“I just want them to enjoy their lunch experience,” Hunter said. “I want to be the one, I remember Mrs. Tracey.”

Every month WFMY News 2’s Lauren Coleman is highlighting heroes in the Guilford County School system who are making a difference in the lives of others.

If you would like to nominate a local hero for 2’s Honor Roll send her an email or Facebook message.
