SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) — The Savannah State football team saw its three-game win streak snapped after a missed extra point resulted in a 28-27 loss to Lane College at Tiger Stadium on homecoming.

The Tigers looked to be in control of the game in the third quarter. Jhaydon Sullivan connected with Da’shun Mitchell on a 45-yard touchdown pass to put Savannah State up, 21-7.

Lane College scored the next 14 points to tie the contest at 21 at the end of regulation. Savannah State won the toss in overtime and elected to play defense. Lane College scored on its first drive on fouth-and-1 from the Savannah State’s one-yard line. The extra point gave Lane College a 28-21 lead.

Savannah State answered on its overtime possession. Joseph Hampton brought the Tigers within a point with a three-yard rushing touchdown, 28-27. However, the Tigers missed the extra point to the right and lost the ball game. The final score was 28-27 in favor of Lane.

“They got a possession, moved it down, we stopped them on third down,” head coach Aaron Kelton said. “They pushed it in on fourth down. We get the ball, we’re in a third-down situation. Sullivan goes through, makes a good play. We run the ball in for a touchdown. Missed the kick.”

When asked about whether or not he thought about going for a two-point conversion Kelton had this to say, “I did. But the percentages say take the kick and get to the next series. He just missed it.”

Savannah State is now 4-4 overall and 3-3 in the SIAC. They return to the field Nov. 2 for Senior night against Albany State.
