Storm Helene's Strength: Trees Topple and Homes Suffer Damage as Winds Strike Apartments

SAVANNAH, G.A. (WSAV) – The powerful overnight winds from Storm Helene have left a trail of destruction in our community.

This includes knocking down large, old trees. Overnight, a massive tree fell onto an apartment building, impacting the lives of several residents inside. As we hear from those affected, it’s clear that the storm’s strength was felt far and wide.

The winds from storm Helene caused a scene for a house filled with apartments overnight. When the tree fell, there were about 5 people inside the building.

“About 1 o’clock a tree actually fell on the roof of our apartment building. It’s completely messed up my next-door neighbor – the person in the unit next to us. Their roof is messed up. A tree went through their window. Pretty much everyone has structural damage,” said Christopher Woolf, a resident inside the damaged home.

Residents say the large tree proves how strong the winds from Storm Helene were.

“Out of all the trees I would have not guessed this one was going to go. There are smaller ones you can see swaying in lesser storms. But that thing (the fallen tree) seemed sturdy before it came down. Definitely daunting looking out your bedroom window and seeing that almost in your bedroom,” said Xavier Riley, another resident that lives inside the damaged building.

The large tree displaced people in multiple apartments.
