Hilton Head Island Football looks to continue great start against rival Bluffton

HILTON HEAD, SC. (WSAV) — Hilton Head Island Football was one of last week’s biggest stories after they took down Hampton County 35-14, who was rated as the number one team in South Carolina Class 2A.

“They’ve all bought in, they all believe,” said Head Coach B.J. Payne about his players. “They handle adversity and they’re great in the classroom as well, they have molded themselves into great young men and it carries through.”

The win provided momentum for not only the season but the overall direction of the program.

“Last week was a big gamer changer for the rest of the season,” said Evan Wilder, left tackle for Hilton Head. “The last few years we have been 3-7, and this year we finally got our fourth win.

Hilton Head Island hadn’t reached four wins since the 2019 season, but this year, all it took was five games, as the Seahawks currently sit at 4-1.

The team didn’t take much time to celebrate, already looking ahead to this week’s rivalry game against Bluffton.

“We enjoyed it over the weekend but now nobody cares,” said Payne. “It’s about what you do next week, and we open regional play this week so we have to be ready to go.”

Bluffton will host Hilton Head Island on Friday at 7:30 p.m.

The game will be broadcast live on WSAV-CW and wsav.com.
